ADHD Med Use Up Among Young Women, New Report Finds...

Over-medicated America. It’s about as loaded a term as they come, and endless think-pieces have already been written on the failure of doctors to accurately treat illness, instead relying on excessive prescriptions to do the heavy lifting for them. But a new analysis from Express Scripts, a company that manages pharmacy benefits has found that it might not be as bad it we initially thought — it might actually be worse. As NPR reports, the overall prescriptions for ADHD rose an astonishing 35.5% from 2008 to 2012. The most common group of people who receives these medications are young boys ages 12 to 18, which is consistent with what we’ve known in the past. What’s troubling, however, is while ADHD med use among children climbed 19%, it soared up to 53% for adults. And adult men are taking less meds, but adult women are actually taking more, as shown by a 4% surge in the numbers.   So, why do women often go about their ADHD without proper attention? Dr. David Muzina, the national practice leader for Express Scripts, told NPR that young boys tend to get diagnosed because they’re most likely loud and disruptive in their classes. Women, on the other hand, usually aren’t, meaning they could be suffering along in silence. Men who were diagnosed a decade ago as boys may have stopped taking their medications — stuff like Ritalin and Adderall — but women may have only recently been diagnosed, hence the disparity. This is even more troubling given findings from last fall that reported on the epidemic of over-prescribing drugs that were once thought to be benign, like antibiotics. Antibiotics won’t do much for a patient with a sore throat unless he or she actually has some kind of infection...

Washington landslide Missing People Number Nosedives to 30...

The number of missing people of Washington’s deadly and dangerous landslide has nosedived from 90 to 30 and the number of confirmed dead has reached to the remarkable hike. Program manager Jason Biermann of Department of Emergency Management said in a press briefing that the number of confirmed dead has increased from 17 to 18 and we have found another body from the debris. He further said that the recovered body has not been identified however we did not include it in the confirmed dead toll. On the contrary, officials of Emergency Management had already speculated that the number of death toll would inevitably be nosedived as residents of Darrington happened to turn up.  Besides, medical examiner Biermann said that “we are facing serious challenges to identify the bodies because rescuers have not found any intact body.” Apart from this, to show solidarity with the deceased families, a church in OSO has planned to hold a ceremony on Saturday.  Mayor of Darrington said that “the wounds of this incident will take too much time to heal and our community is changed forevermore”. It goes without saying that most of the people are still buried in the debris and rescue teams have brought more dogs to find the bodies.Lastly, Rankin said that “in our heart, we are in rescue mode and in our mind we are still in recovery...

Revamped Mobile Applications From Roku Offer a New Look to Those Searching for Content...

Roku recently revamped their mobile software, giving it a much awaited makeover. The new version of the app not only has a cleaner visual design, but it also allows mobile users to easily control any Roku player on their network and efficiently search for content on the fly as well. The new search capabilities are perhaps the best part of the new update, as its new, minimalistic interface lets users hunt for content based on minute details such as actors, directors, and more. Plus, users don’t need their account for most of its functions. Logging-in on one device logs users in to every other linked device. Having a stronger, more capable mobile app will be crucial not just for Roku’s future success, but all companies in general, as many experts have predicted that mobile Internet usage will overtake desktop Internet usage this year.   Between 2009 and 2011, mobile browser share increased by a whopping 1,000%. Mobile commerce now accounts for nearly a quarter (23%) of all online sales, with 49% of smartphone users having made a purchase in the last half of 2013. It’s not enough for companies to have a mobile platform, though. The mobile versions of their sites need to optimized, considering that 43% of customers are unlikely to return to a slow-loading site. Plus, 40% of customers are going to go to a competitor’s site to make a purchase after having a poor mobile experience. Mobile marketing is also important for small businesses, too, since about 50% of people use their mobile devices to find products and services within their local area. Considering the fact that there’s approximately 1.4 billion smartphones in the world, local businesses could quickly gain access to about 700 million new people. Companies both big and...

Home Depot Grants Help Veterans Find and Repair Homes...

The Atlanta-based home improvement giant, The Home Depot, might be more known for its signature orange aprons than charitable donations. However, since 2011, the retailer has handed out more than $65 million in donations and helped 10,000 veterans repair their homes. It has pledged to donate $80 million in home improvement grants by 2015. Earlier this week, it announced that it would donate another $3.9 million to help address veterans’ housing needs. The money will be distributed as follows: $1.7 million for nonprofits to repair or build 323 units of permanent supportive housing for vets with 225 serving veterans with families. $875,000 for critical repairs and maintenance to 126 single-family homes owned by vets and their families. $800,000 to nonprofits that provide transitional housing to 131 homeless vets. $400,000 to an organization that offers 58 female veterans and their families permanent supportive housing. Jake Maguire, a spokesman for the nonprofit organization Community Solutions, praised the Home Depot Foundation for being willing and dedicated to working with experienced local groups. “I think they recognized early on they could make the biggest impact by partnering with as many organizations as they could,” he said. Home Depot President Kelly Caffarelli said that she expects the foundation to continue working on housing problems, with a particular focus on helping veterans, as military cuts take effect. “As long as there are veterans that need help with their housing, I think we’ll continue trying to help,” she said. Even the sturdiest homes will need repairs and maintenance over time, and they can be quite costly. The Home Depot Foundation is working to help homeowners, especially veterans, make costly repairs that are necessary to keep homes safe. Even unseen problems, like tree roots wedging their way into cracks between basement walls...
